The Ovation FD-14 30th Folk series 50th Anniversary Deluxe 2002 model is a fine example of Ovation's uncompromising dedication to delivering premium musical instruments. Introduced as part of Ovation's 30th Anniversary Folk series and later celebrated as the 50th anniversary of the company, this guitar is a special collector's item for any serious acoustic-electric guitar enthusiast.
Design & Construction:BC Rich started the trend of putting "odd-shaped" bodies on electric guitars, but Ovation took the idea and ran with it for the acoustic guitar world. The body of the FD-14 is made from Lyrachord, a lightweight yet resonant composite material. This revolutionary construction provides a fuller, richer, and more dynamic sound than traditional acoustic guitars. The unique bowlback design with a deep, wooden flange at the body edge amplifies the sound and adds to the distinct visual appeal.
Hardware & Electronics:This 2002 edition of the FD-14 comes equipped with a Fishman Sonitone preamp system. It offers a simple yet effective set of controls for volume, bass, treble, and a phase switch, enabling you to balance the acoustic and amplified sounds. The onboard tuner ensures that you are always in tune, even when switching between instruments or during your performance.
Playability & Tone:The Ovation FD-14 features a solid cedar top, which pairs wonderfully with layered mahogany sides and back. The New Age Series II neck is engineered with hand-rubbed satin finish for comfortable playability and easy access to the 20-fret rosewood fingerboard. The 1-3/4 inch nut width ensures a perfect fit for most players, allowing for a balanced and enjoyable playing experience.
Additional Features:This Deluxe 2002 edition comes with additional goodies such as a hard-shell case, a 30th anniversary decal on the headstock, and an exclusive commemorative sidebadge, making it an excellent investment for both semi-professional players and avid collectors.
Despite being more than two decades old, the Ovation FD-14 30th Folk series 50th Anniversary Deluxe 2002 model remains an iconic and highly-sought-after guitar due to its unique blend of style, tone, construction, and versatility. Whether strumming the days away or performing live, the FD-14 delivers a remarkable sonic experience that's as powerful as it is beautiful.
The FD-14 30 Folkore 50 Ovation Deluxe, released in 2002, is a gypsy-style acoustic guitar produced by Ovation. This model is favored by many folk and bluegrass musicians due to its unique design and versatile tonal qualities. Here are some pros and cons to help you decide if this guitar is the right choice for you.
Pros:1. Unique shape and design: The shape of the Ovation FD-14 is the most apparent difference from standard acoustic guitars. Its roundback body shape offers better lower back support and comfort during long playing sessions. The contoured body allows for easier access to the higher frets, and the Lyrachord top provides greater durability and resistance to humidity and temperature changes.
2. Excellent sound: Despite its unique design, the FD-14 30 Folkore 50 possesses a rich, high-quality sound. Its spruce top, scalloped bracing, and advanced design provide much-desired balance between depth, clarity, and projection.
3. Versatility: The Ovation FD-14 is a versatile instrument, capable of handling various musical genres, from folk to rockabilly. Its easier playability also makes it an excellent choice for beginner and intermediate players.
4. Electronics: Equipped with Ovation's proprietary pickup system, the OP-Pro, this guitar delivers a clear and balanced amplified sound. Its onboard preamp provides controls for volume, bass, middle, and treble, ensuring ease of use and sound customization.
Cons:1. Weight: The body shape and the Lyrachord material make the FD-14 slightly heavier than traditional acoustic guitars. This could present a challenge for players with back or shoulder issues.
2. Aesthetics: The FD-14's unique design may not appeal to everyone. Some players might prefer the traditional look and feel of a standard wood acoustic body.
3. Price: The Ovation FD-14 30 Folkore 50 Deluxe is priced higher compared to models in the same price range from other brands. This might be a significant factor for some potential buyers.
In conclusion, the Ovation FD-14 30 Folkore 50 Deluxe offers both novelty and high-quality performance. Its unique design provides sound and comfort benefits along with excellent sound and versatility. However, this comes with a higher price tag and might be heavier than more traditional acoustic guitars. Ultimately, if you're in search of an acoustic guitar with a unique appearance and premium sound quality, the FD-14 could be an ideal choice for you. Otherwise, you may want to consider alternative, more conventional models based on your interests and budget.

This guitar will not disappoint.
This guitar plays like butts. And sounds incredible acoustically, but truly magical when plugged in. Overview the folklore deluxe harps back to Ovation roots with styling and features that echo original Ovation designs from the past.
Limited edition folklore fd 14 our perspective this rare guitar just came in on consignment, its virtually un played, theres barely a hint of wear to the frets and I can not see any scratches, dents or blemishing this fine instrument. Only 50 of these treasures were ever built, I doubt there are many out there in this condition.
The limited edition model, available in the fall of 2002, will consist of only 50 guitars.
