Takamine F-340S Acoustic Guitar (1984) - A Solid Spruce Top Masterpiece with Mahogany Back and Sides

Intro:

The Takamine F-340S is a vintage acoustic guitar from 1984, boasting a solid Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides. This exceptional instrument, produced by the esteemed Japanese guitar manufacturer Takamine, offers a balanced and resonant sound that has endeared it to musicians for decades. In this comprehensive description, we delve deep into the features that make the Takamine F-340S a highly desirable guitar for performers and collectors alike.

Body:

At the heart of the F-340S is its solid Sitka spruce top, which is renowned for its exceptional tonal qualities. Sitka spruce is a prized choice for acoustic guitar tops due to its strength, elasticity, and ability to produce a bright and clear sound. The top is dried meticulously to ensure optimum tonal clarity and sustain.

The back and sides of the guitar comprise beautifully grained mahogany, a sought-after hardwood known for its rich, warm tone. Mahogany contributes to a robust and well-balanced sound, making it a popular choice for both flat-top and semi-hollow body guitars. The combination of the solid Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides results in a guitar with a powerful, full-bodied sound that resonates richly and mellifluously.

The Takamine F-340S features a twin-ply body finish, providing the guitar with an enhanced, protective coating that guards it against the rigors of performing and environmental conditions. This finish also lends the instrument an attractive, glossy appearance, maintaining the guitar's pristine condition over time.

The neck of the F-340S is crafted from Prismatic Radiation Patterned Maple, a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing hardwood. The neck is fitted with a 21-fret ebony fingerboard, which is known for its density and durability. The 12-inch radius of the fingerboard will feel comfortable and easy to navigate for guitarists with a variety of playing styles, while the 1 3/4-inch nut width contributes to a balanced feel permitting good string spacing.

Hardware:

The hardware on the Takamine F-340S consists of a surgical stainless steel bridge pin straight pins and a compensated saddle to improve tuning stability and intonation. Additionally, the guitar sports a new style open-gear tuning machines, which provide smoother tuning and increased tuning stability.

Conclusion:

The Takamine F-340S solid spruce top acoustic guitar from 1984 presents itself as a beautifully appointed instrument with exceptional tonal qualities, desirable features, and a vintage appeal. This vintage guitar with its solid Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides offers a timeless look, powerful sound, and enduring craftsmanship. With its meticulously designed construction, the F-340S embodies the perfect intersection of tradition and innovation, making it an invaluable addition to any guitar collection or the go-to instrument for performing musicians.

The Takamine F-340S is a well-crafted acoustic guitar from Takamine's exclusive line, known for its solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides. Here are some pros and cons that might help you make an informed decision about purchasing this particular model:

Pros:

1. Solid Spruce Top: The solid spruce top is known for producing a clear, bright, and powerful sound. It offers excellent projection and resonance, making it an excellent choice for both live performances and studio recordings.

2. Mahogany Back and Sides: Mahogany back and sides provide a rich, warm, and full-bodied tone that balances the brightness of the spruce top. Mahogany also has a classic look and feel, adding to the guitar's aesthetic appeal.

3. Quality Construction: The Takamine F-340S features a dovetail neck joint, which offers superior stability and strength. Additionally, its side-dot inlays and tortoise shell pickguard contribute to its attractive appearance.

4. Versatile: This guitar's versatile tone allows it to be suitable for various musical genres, from folk to rock.

5. Easily Upgradable: With its fixed bridge, the F-340S can easily be upgraded with a tailpiece or another bridge system for alternative tuning configurations.

Cons:

1. Fixed Bridge: While the fixed bridge allows for easier upgrades, it may decrease the guitar's intonation and sustain compared to a traditional floating bridge.

2. Limited Fingerboard Radius: A shorter fingerboard radius might feel less comfortable for players with larger hands or those who prefer a more modern neck profile.

3. No Cutaway: The lack of a cutaway might limit the upper frets' accessibility for some players, making it more challenging to play barre chords and high-register solos.

In conclusion, the Takamine F-340S offers a beautiful sound, classic appearance, and excellent craftsmanship. It is a versatile guitar that can cater to various musical styles. However, its fixed bridge and limited fingerboard radius might not appeal to all players, especially those who prefer more modern neck profiles or require greater access to the upper frets.

If the pros outweigh the cons for your personal playing needs and preferences, then the Takamine F-340S could be an excellent addition to your collection. Nonetheless, it is always advisable to try it out in person before making a final decision.

Therefore, I would recommend considering demoting this guitar to ensure its sound, feel, and overall quality align with your unique requirements and playing style before making a purchase.

Details:

There are some marks on the guitar as seen in images. The neck is straight.

Takamine F-340S solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides condition is used but in great shape for a guitar made with Ronald Reagan was president. This plays very nice. I bought this some time back and only played it a or two.

It has been humidified as well. The case isn't great but it keeps guitar safe. Fret-wear is minimal.
