The Ovation Applause DS-768E Elite is a high-end acoustic-electric guitar that offers several unique features, making it an attractive option for musicians. However, like any instrument, it comes with its advantages and disadvantages. Here are the pros and cons that may help you make an informed decision before purchasing one.
Pros:1. Unique Ovation Bowlback Body: The DS-768E Elite sports Ovation's signature bowed back body shape, which provides better sound projection and resonance than traditional dreadnought-style bodies.
2. LR Baggs Element Active System: Its high-quality pickup system allows for exceptional amplified sound, delivering a true-to-tone amplified performance ideal for live performances and recording.
3. Luminlay Side Dots: The guitar features Luminlay side dots, making it easier to play in low-light conditions, ensuring accurate positioning of your fingers on the fingerboard.
4. Superior Playability: With a fast C-shaped neck profile and smooth 12-fret neck joint, this guitar offers excellent playability, making it an ideal choice for beginners and experienced players alike.
5. Bridge Pinned Bridge Design: This design element ensures increased string-to-bridge contact, offering superior tuning stability and improved intonation across the entire fretboard.
6. Rich Tone: The DS-768E Elite delivers a rich and balanced tone that is partly due to its unique body shape and quality components, like the solid Sitka spruce top and laminates made fromslightly flamed mahogany.
7. Versatile Applications: With its acoustic-electric design, this guitar is perfect for studio recordings, live performances, and even for practicing quietly at home with headphones.
Cons:1. Expensive: The Ovation DS-768E Elite is a premium-priced guitar, making it a significant investment for many musicians.
2. Weight: The specialized bowlback body and laminated design contribute to the guitar's heavier weight, potentially making it a less ideal option for those who prefer lighter instruments.
3. Limited Fretboard Real Estate: The 12-fret neck joint results in a slightly shorter scale length and less space between the helmet headstock and the first fret, although this can be an advantage for some players who prefer easier reach to the frets.
4. Not Traditional in Appearance: The unique body shape and design features could be a turn-off for players who prefer a more traditional acoustic guitar look.
5. Gloss Finish: While it adds aesthetic appeal, the high-gloss finish on the guitar may require more careful handling and maintenance compared to a satin finish.
Conclusion: The Ovation DS-768E Elite is an exceptional acoustic-electric guitar that offers unique features and superior quality. Its features include a bowlback body, LR Baggs Element active system, Luminlay side dots, fast action neck, and bridge pinned bridge design. However, its high price point, weight, and limited fretboard real estate, along with some players' preference for a traditional appearance and a more matte finish, can be considered drawbacks. Ultimately, the DS-768E Elite's advantages may outweigh the cons for those who desire a high-performing, versatile instrument ideally suited for a wide range of musical applications.
Recommendation: The Ovation DS-768E Elite is an excellent choice for seasoned musicians looking for a high-end acoustic-electric guitar with a distinctive sound and excellent build quality. However, it may not be the most suitable option for beginners or those with a limited budget. For a more affordable yet versatile alternative, consider exploring other mid-range acoustic-electric guitars with similar features.
The fret board has some hairline-is crack creeping up fiber of wood see pictures back neck only minor wear and color finish is still vibrant. For parts or hopefully repair. The top of neck and tuning knobs are in good condition, aside from a couple minor dents on very tip but only noticeable when closely inspected. Theres a scratch on the bottom towards body which can be seen by just looking at it from few feet away.
The tuner and controls work as well. Haven't played with strings but this is based off tapping it on the body and adjusting knobs tuning another guitar next to while plugged in battery. Once finished send me some pictures. Tuning knobs all have a nice feel to them and after turning feeling it out they seem be in good working order.
The metallic finish on knobs is a little scratched and some minor wear but nothing excessive. Looks nice on the inside of body, no signs molding or warping.
If there is something else I can picture or detail for you, please send me a message. But I could be wrong and the damage have been from pressure of bridge pulling up when it was drop. Most notably is the bridge: it looks like somebody might have tried to glue and clamp or not considering this been a poor attempt repair bridge down already.
So that's hopeful. I can count 4 tiny dings aside from the bridge on top of body when looked at closely.
The knob has minor fading to finish around edges. Pick-up functions when plugged in. Guitar took a pretty hard fall unfortunately I many pictures of the defects on. There is a single hairline surface crack coming up towards the neck about 3 inches right at position of low e string see pictures.
I really went into detail on this one because is a rare model and would love to see somebody restore it back great health.
